An attractive copy of Sallust and Florus, printed at Birmingham by John Baskerville in 1774, in a handsome contemporary speckled calf binding.
Baskerville’s classical editions are celebrated for the exceptional clarity, balance and elegance of their typography, and this compact Latin edition is a particularly pleasing example of his later work. It contains the historical writings of Gaius Sallustius Crispus (Sallust) together with those of Lucius Annaeus Florus, bringing together two important Roman historical texts concerned with the rise, conflicts and development of the Roman state.
Very good; an attractive copy in contemporary speckled calf, the spine divided by raised bands with gilt ornament to the compartments and a black morocco lettering-piece.
An appealing example both as a work of classical history and as a product of one of the most important English printers and type designers of the eighteenth century.

Condition
The binding is firm and the boards remain securely attached. The calf shows general rubbing and scuffing consistent with age, with wear and some superficial cracking and abrasion along the external joints, particularly around the raised bands. There is some localised surface loss to the leather on the boards and wear at the corners and extremities. The spine retains its gilt decoration and black morocco lettering-piece.
Internally firmly bound and very clean overall, with light toning and only occasional minor spotting or marks. Period plain endpapers.
