Gilchrist considered not merely sea air, but the effects of motion, climate, diet, sea-sickness and prolonged residence at sea, supporting his arguments with detailed clinical histories. This \u003cstrong\u003e3rd 1771 edition \u003c\/strong\u003erepresents a major expansion of the work: whereas the second edition comprised only 186 pages, this revised version extends to more than 300 pages plus index.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGilchrist devoted particular attention to pulmonary consumption — broadly corresponding to pulmonary tuberculosis — then one of the most feared and poorly understood diseases in European medicine. His advocacy of sea voyages became part of the developing eighteenth- and nineteenth-century tradition of therapeutic travel, sea air and climatotherapy.
